1. Historical Legacy (Established 1965)
The Maharashtra Medical Council is a statutory body established by the Government of Maharashtra under the Maharashtra Medical Council Act, 1965 (Mah. XLVI of 1965). The council represents the statutory continuation of the former Bombay Medical Council, regulating modern scientific medicine practitioners (Allopathy) across the state.
Our central headquarters are situated in Mumbai, handling state-wide registers, continuing medical education guidelines, and disciplinary actions concerning professional ethics and clinical etiquette.
2. Core Directives & Mandates
Maintaining the updated register of practitioners eligible to practice modern scientific medicine in Maharashtra.
Accrediting training platforms, webinars, and conferences to mandate thirty (30) credit hours of life education every five years.
Enforcing the code of conduct, auditing complaints, and initiating disciplinary tribunal hearings against malpractice.
Regulating internship rotations and validating degrees of Foreign Medical Graduates undergoing training.
The Ethical Framework & Disciplinary Powers
The Maharashtra Medical Council is empowered with quasi-judicial authority to hold inquiries into the conduct of registered medical practitioners. The Council strictly enforces the Code of Medical Ethics, ensuring that practitioners maintain the highest standards of professional etiquette and moral character.
In cases where a practitioner is found guilty of infamous conduct in a professional respect, the Council holds the power to issue warnings, suspend registrations temporarily, or permanently strike off the name of the practitioner from the State Medical Register.

- Issuing false medical certificates or bogus credentials.
- Running unregistered clinics or illegal medical facilities.
- Sex-selective abortions or violations of the PC-PNDT Act.
- Advertising clinical services unethically.

Digital Transformation & E-Governance
In alignment with the Digital India initiative, the Maharashtra Medical Council has completely overhauled its administrative infrastructure to provide a seamless, paperless experience for all registered practitioners.
The newly deployed Practitioner Services Portal allows doctors to access their secure digital dossiers, manage CME credits online, apply for additional qualifications, and instantly verify their credentials via OTP. This transition has vastly reduced manual processing times and enhanced data security and transparency.
